She was not alone, because destinies are sealed with something stronger than blood
A true thriller short story by Tooba Qaiser

Snow. Silence. Darkness. Alone.
That is what she thought when she was writing another story in her apartment. The serene silence made her soul sentient and supple. To her the falling snowflakes were telling very delicately the fulsome story of her past. Like visions the drapes of snowflakes were casted before her eyes and each blink of her eyes redounded to the visions of her own past life.
The snow was falling majestically outside and luring her eyes to latch on the spectacle outside her window crammed with snow, silence, darkness and solitude. Absentmindedly she had couched a sentence on the MacBook screen in front of her which must have been long stashed away somewhere very deep in her soul. She was surprised to read it as she herself could never ever glean this content before in her life but she knew that the soul sometimes divulges hidden realms and truths of life when raked with icy snowstorms or floods of tears. And yes, she knew she went through many snowstorms and floods of tears. Something rankled her deeply about the contents of this sentence she wrote. This one sentence meant the upheaval of her life. The veneer of tranquillity which the snow in front of her was conveying so successfully lost all of its sway on her. She closed her MacBook and desultorily she looked out again. Her eyes were beholding and her soul was retaining the snow, the silence, the solitude and…him. She was not alone. She had written the sentence: God Almighty’s arrow will come, then your power will be broken, you will lie in chains, fear of God will prevail, bodily pleasures your potion, cup of poison was your thanks for my angel lights, you wanted to seduce me. This was the sentence which pierced her mind and soul like a wedge. Nothing could curb her shock whilst her heartbeat was staggering. Somehow valiance and bravery were ingrained in her character though. She knew she would dredge up truth. She knew the sentence was deep truth because she had known him. People might ridicule the notion of destiny but she did not. She knew making his acquaintance was destiny because after their encounter her soul was bristling with spiritual diamonds disclosing to her a connection and a truth that were ancient themselves. She knew that destiny is not trapped by the passage of time. She knew that destiny goes beyond death. She knew that destiny is sealed with blood. She knew she was not alone, because destinies are sealed with something stronger than blood. And above all, she had known him. She had seen his dark eyes fixated on her. She recalled the compliments he paid her, she recalled the deep conversations they had while working together, she recalled all the words they had exchanged about God. She flinched. All the time he was hankering for her not for God Almighty as he made her believe. Her veil, her modesty, her chastity were a mere provocation to him. When she gave him a polite brush- off, he insisted. Then their ways parted. But not before her claiming to the world that this man wanted to kill her and that he knew her address. These words landed with the power of a bomb. These words saved her life, of that she was very sure now. These words she hurled via emails at all faculty members of her university. These words must have deflected him from his ill intentions as too many questions were raised afterwards and demanded his answers immediately following my break of news. With these words their story ended. They parted. But she had had always the feeling that she had just grown more interesting to him. More than ever before. She glared at the sentence on her MacBook screen: God Almighty’s arrow will come, then your power will be broken, you will lie in chains, fear of God will prevail, bodily pleasures your potion, cup of poison was your thanks for my angel lights, you wanted to seduce me. What did this mean? Was this all not over many years ago? Who was he? What power of his was hovering over her all these years like a verdict of death sentence?
To her it was riveting though to gain insight into a person who could so mind- bogglingly and adeptly shift from one character to another. These lines were fraught with reverberations of a vicious genius as a genius he definitely was when she met him at work. She was a wholesome student of the human nature since school times. She loved to behold, to observe, to analyze, to pin down the individual quirks of complex personalities and to shake their personalities by pulling the invisible strings holding together their emotional patchwork. But she knew one thing for sure. She could not shake him. She could never reach the core of his personality and pepper him with the ideas of morality. She could never shake the grounds of his personality to make him budge on his actions. Whatever his actions were now. She recalled him exuding so much power and authority when they worked together at the university some years ago and that his charismatic personality was surely enthralling at first but also caused trepidation and fear in her. When love turns into obsession and is mingled with jealousy then it most likely turns into aggression. And obsession can never be satisfied. It craves for more always. It craves for possession, for knowledge, for control and for power. And he was obsessed with her. She recalled now he was keenly appreciative and inquisitive about her life, about her interests, about her talents, about her weekend plans and habits. He was so deft in sifting out the tenets from her nebulous and reserved character and to deploy them in a way to make her admiring him. He figured out the subtleties of her character and her desires in life and complimented her on them. He complimented her beyond the surface and all women are off their guard when complimented by the opposite sex. He was so quick and expert in determining the chink in one’s armor and to build on this base the firm walls of his flattery. He was notably charming and no woman in his grasp could neglect this. He once said to her, that she was very pure and chaste. He knew she cared for inner purity within the holy shrine of chastity and virginity. But he never cared for her purity or chastity as she shockingly gleaned afterwards. No, that was not entirely true. He was very possessive and jealous as she realized much later. But she could say point blank, that he did not care about her purity in context with him but he did care about it in context with other men. He just knew how to act to make hopefully every female head turn and to charm with his canny demeanor additional to his muscles. But unfortunately, her head did not turn. Nevertheless he whetted to some degree her interest. He showed all nobilities of a gentleman and above all, too often he showed the same interests and penchants as she did. God, spirituality and chastity were crucial to her life so he double-crossed her. He played a game with her. To her it seemed he admired her chastity and devotion for God Almighty. But he did not, he never did. Her chastity was all the time a mere provocation to his manhood. He was also weird many times and behaved strangely. Often his jokes even made her angry and she never had the feeling that they were entertaining the proper supervisor and student relationship. Right from the beginning he treated her as a friend. When she was cross with him he merely retorted that he just loved it when she got angry. And how angry she was when she mailed to everyone that this man wanted to seduce her and kill her. She always knew that he loved her anger. At first glance everyone would expect that this man would hate her and loathe her forever, after her having blasted this bomb at his reputation so overtly for everyone. But she had a deeper insight into human nature. When he wished to keep in touch with her after her work was done, she demurely declined this offer of him. She clarified that she appreciated him much but could not keep in touch with him as she is a chaste woman. He smirked and said: „You are very interesting.“ Unaffected of her refusal he resumed his efforts to convince her of the opposite. She knew all the time that she had just grown the more interesting to him after she had blasted the bomb. A woman who bravely spoke her mind and valiantly defied the power of virility appertaining for any other woman to respect and to surrender before it.
He once said to her that she was the reason which brought up weird behavior in him. So what did she bring out in him after these emails were sent back then. Since then subconsciously she was always racking her mind to find answers to this question. She must have completely reeled him with her emails sent to everyone claiming he wanted to kill her and was aware of her home address. And she knew she must have unawares the more hooked him in. So what did he do after their dramatic separation and end?
She now had the answer in front of her. God Almighty’s arrow will come, then your power will be broken, you will lie in chains, fear of God will prevail, bodily pleasures your potion, cup of poison was your thanks for my angel lights, you wanted to seduce me. She wondered, how he could possibly be so entrenched in power and ostensibly subjugate her all the time? Where is he? She looked outside the window. The falling snow was howling and merging its placid harmony fatally with its deadly iciness. Something felt damn frozen in her life just as the snow flakes outside her window. Something seemed frozen in her life since her encounter with him.

Snow. Silence. Darkness. She. And him.
The past moments of her life were not her own memories but his spectacle all along. She was swaying under the weight of her thoughts. As if these lines she wrote four years ago were now becoming a letter of love and hate. She was reading in this letter the war of life, love, hate and death orchestrated all these years in the winds as a symphony, always audible, always present, but never grasped. Her beauty was not a secret which the mirror kept silent about. Another mirror gauged all the time. He knew her, knew her perhaps even better than she did herself. The light of her eyes marred with her tears. And his eyes were forever marred with her countenance. This was the upshot, the ramification of him doting on her all these years, stalking her all these years. He watched her. He watched her all along. She was not groomed for this reality though she recalled all the Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes stories she had voraciously devoured for all these years. Like the sleuths in these stories, he, too, was observing, analyzing, immersing in the invisible and deep parts of her personality and ascertaining the very foundations of her personality. But one thing was different. He was not the sleuth but the criminal and she was coerced into the role of the sleuth.
She could not see him but she knew he could see her. Bodily pleasures your potion, cup of poison was your thanks. He wanted her. He wanted her back then and most probably he would strike again.
Her chest was heaving. Her heart was throbbing. Her mind was reeling. She knew it. She knew it all along. The woman’s instinct in her was always giving her the premonition for the past few years that he wanted to come. That he wanted to see her. That he would come and grab her. She knew that women are endowed by God with special instincts to protect their vulnerability from vicious men. After all female chastity is sacred to God Almighty. He tried to scare her at home, at sports, at the hospital where she had pursued her master thesis project. Not personally of course, but by giving her solid proofs that he was observing her. She clenched her fists and banged them on her table. The flush of anger was creeping up her cheeks. He went through the usual stalking curriculum like getting out stuff she had thrown away into the trash and presenting it to her as a gift, like destroying her car, her bicycle, like making some morons to follow her and to accost her. However, she was not sure at all if these were just morons or inveterate delinquents. For God’s sake, how many people were abetting him in this? Were people nowadays that venal and so easily persuaded to aid an insane and obey a testosterone driven fanatic? He even managed to molest her at the hospital where she was working on her master thesis project. He was a politician somehow. She smiled. A charming, very rich, ruthless politician with high IQ, with very good leadership qualities and always dexterously displaying the mask of unwavering morality. The perfect mixture for a large-scale disaster. He was a politician when she met him. She had quickly realized back then that this man knew exactly how to get what he wanted. You messed with the wrong woman.
She knew this game will never end until one party was decisively beaten. Seemingly a story to end at the Day of Judgement. God’s arrow will come, you will lie in chains, fear of God will prevail. He was underestimating her, he was clearly forgetting their past and that she warned him right from the beginning: „I am sure you must have noticed, I am not an ordinary girl.“ But then perhaps, she was underestimating him, too. Cup of poison was your thanks.
She heaved a sigh. She felt her next adventure was awaiting her.
